Four years was a long time to go without pro hockey, but KC hockey fans survived…somehow. In 2009, the KC area was blessed with a new team to play in the CHL. After a name the team contest, the Missouri Mavericks brought pro hockey back. On May 29, 2009, Scott Hillman was named the first bench boss. The Mavs, as the name would be shortened, played their first regular season game to an announced crowd of 5,760.
After a couple of years as an independent, they would enter an affiliation with the AHL Chicago Wolves. They continued this relationship through 2015.
On October 7, 2014, the CHL ceased operations. But, the Mavericks weren’t without a place to play. The ECHL picked up the Mavericks as an expansion franchise.
On February 15, 2015, the franchise was purchased by Lamar Hunt, Jr., son of the late Lamar Hunt. In preparation for the 2015-2016 season, the Mavs entered a 2-year affiliation with the New York Islanders. This meant they would be in line behind the AHL team in Bridgeport for prospects.
The Missouri Mavericks name was changed to Kansas City Mavericks on March 11, 2017. This was done to reflect the team belonged to the metro. On June 8, 2017, they found themselves with another NHL team choosing to align with them. The Calgary Flames chose KC to become home for their ECHL prospects.
This summer of 2022 saw another affiliate change. The Mavericks became the ECHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, backing up the AHL Coachella Valley Firebirds as a landing place for Kraken prospects.
