On July 7, 2004 it was announced KC would be receiving a United Hockey League franchise. The majority owner, Stephen Franke, was chief executive owner of MidWest Quality Gloves Inc. Franke was also a majority owner of Summit Sports, the parent company of the Fort Wayne Komets. A name the team contest was held. The three top nominations were Twisters, Express, and Outlaws. 7,092 votes were cast, and the owners chose Outlaws. Gail Rowland of Overland Park was the winner of tickets for a lifetime. The Outlaws folded after just one season of play.
