In July 1977, Detroit Red Wings president Ted Lindsay came to KC scouting the area in hopes of placing the Wings minor league affiliate. The KC Red Wings served as the Detroit Red Wings farm team from 1977-79. After two years, the Wings moved their affiliate to Glen Falls, NY.

In the two years, six players were chosen as stand out representatives of the team. For the 1977-78 season Larry Giroux was awarded the Orr Trophy for the league’s most valuable defenseman, Fern “JP” LeBlanc was a first team All-Star at left wing, and goalie Terry Richardson was a second team All-Star. The following year Mal Davis was a first team right wing and LeBlanc was a second team All-Star. Goalie Ron Low was awarded the Tommy Ivan Award, as well as being chosen a first team All-Star.
